i was looking up the benefits of lemon water and i found this

Warm lemon water serves as the perfect good morning drink, as it aids the digestive system and makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier. It prevents the problem of constipation and diarrhea from taking place, by ensuring smooth bowel functions.

so maybe ya could get her to drink homemade lemonade with just a tiny tiny bit of sugar and it might help :)

Thank you, Brenda!! Those articles are fantastic!! I've read the second one several times now and this is the approach I will take.

Quote
No matter which MD you go to, you will likely get the same simplistic advice you have already tried, unsuccessfully--apparently, since you are reading this note. If that kind of advice had worked, you wouldn't be asking a perfect stranger for better advice.

If this isn't the truth for me right now I don't know what is!  lol

So, our doc is starting the process over again with us. She's told me to put her back on the Lactulose - 1 tbs/day in the morning. She's also told me to use Senekot (senna) at night. So Avery will get both. The Lactulose is apparently a laxative and the Senekot is the stool softener. Both should work together to clean her out on a regular basis. She's referring her to a pedi - our doc is just a gp - and this pedi specializes in GI issues and my doc said she is good with the behavioral side of things, too. So I'm waiting on my appointment with this new doc. In the mean time, I've started the Lactulose and Senekot.

My doc told me I was doing a good job of managing this even though I am completely frustrated, which was nice to hear. She said to continue giving her an enema if she's still not going regularly to keep getting the poop out since holding the poop in for so long will do more damage than an enema will do. So, every other day I will do this if she's not going.

Since I spent over $40 on the Lactulose and Senekot (both are over-the-counter and not covered by our drug plan!) before reading that article Brenda posted, I will try that approach but with those two meds instead of the mineral oil and Metamucil. We'll see what happens.

Brenda - Do you know anything about Lactulose and Senekot? I have to mix both in something to get Avery to take them but my SIL (who's in pharma sales) says the Lactulose is so hard to dose b/c it's all sugar and any other sugar in Avery's diet might tip the scales and be counter productive. She says even something like a glass of juice could set it off. I have to put the Lactulose IN juice or Avery will not drink it. And the Senekot is a bitter, awful tasting (yes, I tasted it! I taste all the medicine before I give it to the kids so I know what it's like for them!  lol) black liquid. I put this in a shot of chocolate milk with lots of chocolate to mask the taste. Am I making these meds less effective by doing this? Should I be very strict about Avery's sugar intake when she's on the Lactulose? Is there anything else that you know about these two meds that might help me out? TIA mad scientist!!

I'd love to Joell - if only she ate food!  lol I don't think it'll mix in well with a cracker, a slice of bologna, or a piece of cheese and that's pretty much her entire diet these days.  lmao I could get the Lactulose in yogurt, though. Maybe that's what I need to serve her every day for breakfast. Lactulose in Activia might work very well indeed . . .

I could also do the Senokot in pudding at night. Not as good as yogurt but it's an option.

Black mashed potatoes lmao Chocolate pudding would work well smile Esp the sugar free kind so you don't have to worry about the sugar!

I'm glad your Dr took you seriously and is working on a plan with you! I hope the new Pedi can figure it out if this doesn't take off.

The lactulose is like a light yellowy syrup like corn syrup. The senokot is black - reminds me of oil.

If she's not eating well, that's not going to help either is it I suppose.  I wonder if you could get some help with that - then maybe if she ate some fruits and veggies, the fibre in those would make her go?

I don't know a lot about senna, but we use lactulose a lot.  It's a stool softener, not a laxative.  I've never heard about issues with it and sugar, but I can try to find out if you want.  We often give it in combination with fibogel which is a bulking agent I think rather than a gut stimulant.  But I'm no expert at all on bowels and such.

It shouldn't "tip the scales" and prevent it from working.  It could throw the body too far off balance and give her stomach cramps.  All Lactulose is is a super concentrated milk sugar that draws water into her bowels (make sure she has plenty to drink or it won't work)  You could try making kool-aid with it in place of sugar as I've heard it is fairly sweet.

Most things she eats or drinks will be in the osmotic (that's the # of particles dissolved in a liquid) range of the body, so it shouldn't matter.  If she was eating too much sugar she would be dehydrated and obese.

I've never seen Senokot in a suspension before only tab/capsules.  With it just make sure she has plenty of water with this also.  And don't be surprised if it discolors her urine.

I've been meaning to write an update.  spank

We've been using the Lactulose and Senokot for a few days now and every single day she's had multiple poop accidents, which have been an absolute mess! I think she's getting the urge to go and cannot clench it away and it's coming out of her all over the place! On the bright side, the poop is coming out EVERY day so far which is a huge step in the right direction. The down side is, it's WAY too soft and she's not doing it on the potty. *sigh* I think I'm beginning to realize why "bulking" the stool is an important step. Now that we have it all lubricated and soft, it's a little too soft.  lol

I think I might dial back on the Senokot since this is the black liquid one that is really hard to get her to take and see if the poop firms back up just a little on the Lactulose alone. I think this is the worst part - finding the right dose to have soft, lubricated stool without turning it into diarrhea!

Poor girl, the day after we started using both and she had her first accident she was sitting on the potty while I was trying to clean her up and her poor tummy was just rolling and gurgling like she'd just drank a bottle of Exlax! Poor thing!

I can't get her to drink much water but she loves her juice. I know it's not as good as water so I think I might go back to watered-down apple juice only for her to keep her well hydrated.

We continue to try . . .

Oh and I got a call from our GP today. Our pedi appointment is scheduled for Feb 23 at 9:30 am so we'll wait and see what this new doc says, too.

Yes, she'll eat fruit but only bananas (which can constipate and be counter productive), grapes, and apples.

I always have a ton on hand and try to get her to eat as much as possible. She used to eat blueberries like they were going outta style but won't touch them any more. She won't touch melon . . . But she did eat watermelon once. I wonder if she would again because that's all water. But it's not the most convenient fruit going.  lol She won't touch strawberries or raspberries even though I KNOW she'd like the taste if she'd just try.

I could start doing fruit smoothies and get frozen fruit and make it with yogurt, Lactulose, and water and ice to make it thick . . . Would that even taste good?  lol She loves chocolate banana milk shakes when I make them for her. She calls it her "shake milk".  lol

Thank you guys for all your suggestions. Really. I am so glad I finally posted about this. I should have done it much sooner. I should have known you all would have some good advice and suggestions and if nothing else lots of sympathy for me with my frustration - which, honestly, is the most meaningful to me. I've been battling with this for so long and I sometimes feel just so desperate and alone with this. Anyway, you all have been SO much help. Thanks!!

hugs Well, everyday is progress at least. Hopefully she'll start putting it in the potty soon hugs

Apple juice has a diarrhea affect on Eli. I have to severely water it down to the point it doesn't taste good. But keep it on hand for if he starts to need a little softening. He hates water too though. She'd probably love the smoothies! mmmmm
