http://www.eatstudy.co.uk/study_info.html

Henry was invited to take part in this study.  We couldn't because we don't live in the right area, but I though it was an interesting concept, and it will be interesting to see what the findings are.

Basically it's looking at early introduction of potentially allergenic foods in otherwise exclusively breast fed babies.  First they test the baby for an allergy to make sure that there isn't one, and then from a very early age (3  months) they'll add in tiny amounts of foods like peanuts).  The theory behind it is that exposure to tiny amounts of these foods stops the body becoming hyper-sensitive to them.  Logically that seems to make sense to me.  They are also looking at the massive rise in allergies in the UK since weaning guidelines were changed and babies are now weaned much later.  When I was a baby (1976) the advice given was to start solids at 3months old.  That seems crazy to me - as Henry is now 4 months and IMO nowhere near ready for anything other than mummy milk.

But I think it's an interesting concept, and I'll be looking out for the results.

Interesting! It does make some sense, I've done some research on wheat allergies since they seem to be in our family and there seems to be a time frame on introducing that in order to not be hyper sensitive to it as well.
Here they're only just starting to get away from 3-4 months starting solids. Audrey wasn't ready by 3-4 but she seems very ready now at 5.

In the UK there's a whole 'Fit for Life' campaign to tackle obesity and general unfitness, including childhood obesity.  And one of the slogans for that is 'Don't rush to mush' - trying to encourage people to delay solids until 6m.  And also telling you to do the 'banana test' - if your child can sit up and grab a banana and put it to his mouth and sort of gum it around a bit, then he's probably ready.

I've been to my 'weaning group' at the local health centre, to be told what to do and when, and apparently lots of people are still trying to give babies adult food at 3m, and doing things like putting cereal in the bottles - because their mum's and grandparents are telling them that that's what they did.

I've always wondered if the rise in allergies in children had to do with what we ate or didn't eat when we were pg. We are told to stay away from peanuts and stuff like that when pg, seems allergies are on the rise.

I ate everything, including peanuts while pg and my kids have zero food allergies. There just may be some link to early exposure.

Very interesting.

That is really interesting. DH's cousin has massive food allergies to the point now that if she has anything that even touches dairy it will literally kill her. I just hope the boys don't inherit those allergies.

I didn't know you weren't supposed to eat peanuts while pregnant...I lived off peanut butter in both pregnancies! I ate turkey too, heated with Eli but with Audrey I totally forgot you're supposed to heat it until I was like 7 months, then I felt like a moron. I ate a lot of hot dogs too but they were always steaming.

That is very interesting!  I think I had solids super early, like 4 months, and mom was considered a bit nutty for waiting that long (early 70s)

I ate plenty of peanut butter both pregnancies.
