I get WIC because I am pregnant and I didn't use all the milk.  I bought more at convenient stores because of the weather.  I have 3 and a half gallons to get today.  Can I freeze one?  If I freeze it how long do they last after you thaw them out?

My mom is always freezing her milk b/c they don't drink it fast enough but I don't personally think it freezes well. It sort of separates and I find it tastes gross when it thaws back out. But I can be sort of picky on the taste of milk sometimes.

We drink a ton of milk anyway but not 3 gallons in 2 weeks (the usual drink by date).

I never got the full amount of milk when I had WIC with Eli. They give you SO much there's no way humanly possible to get it all drank and I didn't want to waste it, so I just got like half of what was allowed.  My mom always told me to get it all and freeze it but I'm super picky over milk too and if it was at all weird I wouldn't be able to touch it. It'd be good for cooking probably. But I really don't know how you'd go about doing it. You'd probably need to dump some out to allow for expanding.

You can freeze it, I agree with Jamie though. You can always add chocolate syrup to it wink or bake, make lots of things that require milk! lol

another link I read said to use it for chocolate milk and baking lol Apparently it does get weird, skim and 1% are the best to freeze but even those loose something in freezing.

Next time can you request that when they print your checks, they put no more than two milk on one ticket? I know they'd do that for ya here.

I will try it this time and see how it goes.  We always use 5 or 6 gallons a month and wic only gives me 4 so I will take it all.

Erin, I have 2 tickets left.  We had so much bad weather and I live 30 minutes from town so I just didn't get to use them.

Does your milk have a "sell by" date or a drink by date?  In NY it is a sell by date and the milk is usable 1-2wks after that...

I think it is a drink by date but is still good for a few days after.

I have frozen milk before but it was the little bottles. You have to open it and pour a little off to allow for expansion. It did taste a little different when we thawed it so I mostly used it for coffee or cooking.

We have sell by dates but I never, ever drink it past the date. I have to use milk within one week of opening, unless the week is up before the date. Then I just can't do it. It grosses me out so bad lol I'll use it in cooking, but to drink (which I rarely do) or in cereal I am strict.
Funny since I was raised on a dairy farm and grew up drinking unpasteurized stuff...though that was really only good for 2-3 days, at least in my opinion lol I only recently got grossed out by milk lol

I grew up on farm milk too and it took me years to get used to store milk... I still shake my milk before each use... lmao

It actually takes a fairly long time for unopened pasteurized milk to go bad or to grow anything at all.

Yuck I hate milk.   lol  Anyway you can freeze it but I have never tried it.
You can have them separate it out more so that they won't be all on the same checks, but sometimes it will separate it so much that you will have like a hundred checks and make it a big pita.  We could do that but not choose what went on each check.
Also rest assured that if there is a month that you don't get to use all your checks the money will be recycled into the system not lost forever it just takes a while for the system to realize what was not cashed.  So while if you are never using it all par it down, but don't worry if you miss a check now and then there isn't waste.   smile
